On our way back I stayed too long looking at something in a shop and got separated from Mr. Butler. I walked through the crowd rapidly, looking ahead to find him. I saw some Chinese students coming towards me. They were dressed in European clothes and walked with a certain swagger. As they drew nearer, one of them detached himself from the others and, crossing the road, walked straight into me, so that our heads, chests and knees buffeted together. Then he passed on swiftly while I was still too dazed to think. The next thing I heard was the guffaw of laughter from his friends when he rejoined them.

I pushed on, feeling hot and humiliated and furious.

“What’s wrong with you’” Mr. Butler asked when at last I found him, “you look very queer.”

“I’ve been running. I thought I’d lost you,” I said. I found I could not tell him what the students had done.
